World HMV Day – Kerrie Randall

What is your name and where do you work?
My name is Kerrie and I’m a Healthcare Assistant for the North East Assisted Ventilation Service (NEAVS)
What is your professional background?
I spent 10 years working in childcare before moving into adult healthcare, which I’ve been doing for the past 4 years
How long have you worked with HMV users?
I’ve been working with HMV users for around 3 years
How did you come to specialise/work in this area?
I’ve always enjoyed working in the community and wanted to continue doing that. When the opportunity came up to support patients both at home and in hospital, I jumped at it!
What is your role in supporting HMV users and in what way can you help them?
I’m a Healthcare Assistant with NEAVS and I’m heavily involved in the equipment and monitoring side of care. I order masks, tubing, filters and other consumables, keep an eye on stock levels, and make sure everything is available when patients need it.
I also carry out mask reviews in patients’ homes, working closely with them to find the most comfortable and effective mask fit. On top of that, I support and train patients to use TOSCA monitors, which give us overnight readings of oxygen and carbon dioxide levels. These results help our consultants review breathing support and make any necessary adjustments.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
The people! I really enjoy visiting patients at home, especially when I can make them more comfortable through a successful mask review. I’m very much a people person and love being able to help.
What is the worst part of your job?
Not being able to help as much as I’d like. If someone needs a mask adjusting and I can’t quite get the perfect fit for them, it’s really upsetting – I always want the best outcome for our patients.
What are the biggest challenges you face?
Finding the perfect mask – it can be a real challenge, but it’s always worth it when we get there.
Why should other healthcare professionals consider a career specialising in HMV?
It’s incredibly rewarding. Being able to support people to live full, active lives while using ventilation at home is a really special part of the job.
What do you know now that you wish you’d known 10 years ago?
You’re not crazy – it’s ADHD!
What is your ‘top tip’?
Wash your fringe in the sink – it makes your hair look super fresh without the effort of a full shower!
What would be your desert island luxury?
Binoculars! How else am I supposed to see all the cool birds?
