Meet the Team – Naveed Mustfa

Meet Naveed Mustfa, member of the HMViP from University Hospital of Nroth Midlands

I’m a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine and Clinical lead for the Midlands Regional Complex Home Ventilation and Weaning Unit and director of the North Midlands Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Research and Care Centre

What is your interest in HMV?
As a medical trainee when I first came across a patient presenting with unexplained breathlessness that was then diagnosed with MND, I was surprised to see the response to HMV.

The physiology and human benefits were so interesting. I was alarmed to see this was not so widely available, but I remained interested in this treatment and was lucky to complete a PhD at King’s College London on MND and HMV. It is wonderful to see the progress HMV has made and the benefits patients, carers and relatives have received and
that is much more widely available.

When did you join the HMViP?
2022

What do you personally hope to see the group achieve?
There are many resources available for clinicians and healthcare providers, but the HMViP has worked hard to identify the needs of patients and carers. I would like to help address the specific concerns of HMV users and their relatives and to help prepare them to achieve optimal benefit from treatment and be empowered to be aware of all options that are available.
